In every marriage, there will be voices offering opinions, advice, and perspectives about how a husband and wife should live. Some counsel may be helpful, but not every voice deserves a place in your marriage. Friends, relatives, colleagues, social media, and even well-meaning people may sometimes speak from their own experiences, frustrations, or incomplete understanding. If you listen indiscriminately, you may allow outside opinions to create suspicion, comparison, resentment, or division between you and your spouse. Scripture reminds us to be careful about the counsel we accept and to seek wisdom that is consistent with God’s Word (Proverbs 13:20; James 3:17).
Guarding your marriage does not mean isolating yourselves from godly counsel; it means being discerning about whose voice you allow to influence your relationship. When problems arise, resist the temptation to expose every private matter to everyone around you. Instead, pray together, communicate honestly, and seek counsel from mature, trustworthy, and godly people when necessary. Do not allow someone else’s failed relationship, bitterness, or personal agenda to become the blueprint for your marriage. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).
Your marriage deserves intentional investment. Choose to speak well of your spouse, protect one another’s dignity, resolve conflicts with love, and remain committed to growing together. When you make Christ the foundation of your relationship, outside voices lose their power to determine your direction. Listen for God’s voice above all others, and let His Word shape your decisions, attitudes, and commitment. A strong marriage is built when two people continually choose love, faithfulness, forgiveness, and unity—even when others do not understand their journey (Colossians 3:14; Ecclesiastes 4:12).
