A relationship built on lust cannot provide the stability needed for a lifelong commitment. Lust is driven by selfish desires and temporary emotions, while genuine love is rooted in sacrifice, commitment, and a sincere desire for the other person’s well-being. Physical attraction has its place in marriage, but when it becomes the primary foundation of a relationship, it cannot sustain the challenges that inevitably come with life. God’s design is for relationships to be built on love, purity, trust, and a shared commitment to Him (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).
The story of Amnon and Tamar serves as a sobering warning about the destructive nature of lust. Amnon believed he was in love with Tamar, but what he felt was selfish desire rather than godly love. After satisfying his lust, his so-called love turned into hatred, leaving devastation in its wake (2 Samuel 13:1–15). This account reminds us that lust seeks to satisfy self, while true love seeks to honor God and protect the dignity of another person. Genuine love grows stronger with time because it is founded on godly character rather than fleeting emotions (1 Thessalonians 4:3–5).
If you are preparing for marriage or currently in a relationship, ask God to purify your motives and guard your heart. Build your relationship on Christ, cultivate friendship, develop mutual respect, and pursue holiness together. A relationship established on God’s love will endure the tests of time because it is anchored in His truth rather than unstable emotions. What begins with Christ has the strength to last a lifetime (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 7:24–25).
