God designed the family to be a place where His presence is honoured, His Word is taught, and His purposes are established. The man, as the spiritual head of the home, has a significant responsibility to function as the priest of his family. A priest represents God to his household and leads his family towards God through prayer, godly example, instruction, and spiritual discipline.
Unfortunately, many men are not living up to this responsibility. Some provide materially but neglect the spiritual needs of their families. Others leave prayer, Bible study, and spiritual instruction entirely to their wives. Yet, leadership in the home is not only about paying bills, making decisions, or providing protection; it also involves taking spiritual responsibility for the direction and wellbeing of the family.
Job gives us a powerful example. Scripture tells us that Job regularly rose early to offer sacrifices on behalf of his children because he was concerned about their relationship with God (Job 1:5). Joshua also boldly declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). These men understood that their spiritual responsibility extended beyond themselves to their households.
Dear husband and father, your family needs more than your provision; they need your priesthood. Let your children see you pray. Let them hear you speak God’s Word. Let your wife know that you are committed to building a home where Christ is honoured. You may not be perfect, but you can be intentional. The spiritual atmosphere of your home must not be left to chance. Rise and take your place as the priest of your home.
