As long as we keep our focus on Jesus, our relationship stands strong. But when we look away, we begin to sink. The story of Peter walking on water in Gospel of Matthew 14:29–31 illustrates this truth clearly. While Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked above what would normally destroy him. But the moment he shifted his focus to the wind and waves, fear entered and he began to sink.
In relationships, distractions like fear, doubt, offense, and external pressures can pull our attention away from Christ. Jesus’ response to Peter, “Why did you doubt?” reminds us that stability comes from faith, not circumstances. When couples and individuals keep Christ at the center, they are able to stand firm even in storms that would otherwise shake them.
A Christ-centered relationship does not mean there will be no challenges, but it means there is always direction, hope, and strength. Epistle to the Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. When we consistently look to Him in prayer, obedience, and trust, our relationships are anchored and sustained through every season.
