Honoring Your Spouse in Public and Private

Anchor Scripture: Ephesians 5:33

” Let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. “

Marriage is a covenant built on love, honor, and mutual respect. One harmful habit that can weaken this bond is speaking negatively about a spouse before outsiders. Public criticism, mockery, or exposing a partner’s weaknesses to others can damage trust and gradually invite disrespect into the relationship. God desires that spouses protect each other’s dignity both in private and in public.

Words carry great power. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” When we consistently speak honorably about our spouses, we strengthen their confidence and preserve the unity of the marriage. However, when we demean them before family, friends, or colleagues, we unintentionally give others permission to dishonor them as well. Wisdom teaches us to correct issues privately while showing respect publicly.

Christ calls believers to build one another up through grace-filled speech. Colossians 4:6 encourages us to let our speech always be with grace. A healthy marriage grows where there is mutual honor, encouragement, and protection of one another’s reputation. Even during disagreements or difficult seasons, spouses should remain committed to speaking with dignity and love. By honoring our spouse before others, we reflect God’s design for unity and respect in marriage.
