A marriage becomes strong when both partners prioritize patience instead of pride. Pride insists on being right, defended, and unyielding, while patience chooses restraint, wisdom, and peace. One builds tension; the other builds stability. Scripture repeatedly shows that humility and self-control are the foundation of healthy relationships, especially in moments of conflict.
A powerful example is found in the story of Abigail and Nabal in 1Samuel 25. Nabal was described as harsh, rude, and foolish, quick to insult David and refuse kindness that could have brought peace. His pride nearly brought destruction upon his entire household. In contrast, Abigail responded with wisdom, humility, and urgency. She did not allow pride to escalate the situation; instead, she acted with patience and discernment to prevent disaster.
Abigail’s response teaches that patience is not weakness, it is strategic strength. She stepped in with calm reasoning, prepared provisions, and respectfully appealed to David, turning away wrath and saving lives. Her humility preserved what pride was about to destroy. This contrast shows that in any relationship, especially marriage, one partner’s patience can prevent irreversible damage when pride tries to take control.
